It Gets Worse

The ER facility called us back today and said upon further review of the x-rays they thought Princess might be having heart issues. We took her to our vet since we were going there anyway and further x-rays revealed deterioration of her lungs since last night and fluid build-up which they said was consistent with heart problems. We went back to the emergency/referral facility to a cardiologist and she's there overnight for more tests (ultrasound, EKG) and being given oxygen and fluids since she's not eating or drinking. Apparently she may have had latent heart disease which was triggered by the stress of surgery. They said depending what they find it's likely she'll have a shortened life span and need to be on heart meds for the rest of her life. That's the best case scenario.

Our poor little baby. Last Friday when we had her surgery and my u/s the same day I remember thinking that if something had to go wrong with one, better the kitty than the pregnancy. Now I'm so guilty for ever thinking that. I know people have actual children with health problems and obviously this doesn't compare, but our cats are all we have. She was the only thing that made me happy since losing the Doodles. And of course DH is really worried about my anxiety levels and it affecting the pregnancy (incidentally, our vet asked me while we were there if I was pregnant - god knows how he could tell since at 8 weeks I'm certainly not showing, I guess I just looked fat. When I said yes he said something along the lines of me not needing this stress, so now DH keeps saying even the vet agreed that I can't get anxious). Nothing can ever be easy, can it?

poor princess. I am so sorry you are having to deal with this right now -- DH and the vet are right, you don't need this stress!

I'm so sorry your dealing with all of this. I am pray for you, and for you guys.

So sorry to hear this...

However, I had a friend whose cat had a latent heart condition (it was a form of cardiomyopathy) that wasn't diagnosed until after they rescued her at the age of three, and she lived quite a few wonderful, productive years (and eventually passed away at a relatively old age from something not heart-related). So I will be sending good thoughts Princess's way and expecting news of her full recovery!

Watching another living thing hurt or be in pain is hard. Just reading this post makes me tear up. Kitty's are such lovers and they really do expose an unconditional love that a non-cat owner will never understand.

I'm very sad to hear about her possible condition and I hope the best for her and for you!

Thank you for posting an update!

This is such a bad turn. I am sorry, Kathy.

Please try to adhere to what DH and vet are advising when it comes to takig care of you, too. (I can't imagibe how touch that is right now, though).

I am so sorry to hear that Princess is sick! I am not much of an animal person, but I would still be devestated if something happened to our dog (inherited with marriage.) Thinking of you and wishing you didn't have this stress to deal with.

I'm so sorry! Poor little princess. Our cats are like our children too, so I know how you feel. Our little girl has chronic renal failure and it's so sad. She has a lot of meds and gets sub-q fluid treatments every other day, but she is living a happy life.

In terms of your guilt. When Asha became sick in April and we were able to restore her health I had many moments when I thought about how I'd be willing to give up both of our cats for more time with Myles. This doesn't mean you don't love your little princess. Many hugs are coming your way!

My heart just sank when I read this. My best friend is a Vet and it is remarkable the stories she has told me. My own cat is a cancer survivor. I hope that Princess will pull through. ((hugs))

Oh, poor kitty! Did the breeder happen to guarantee against any type of health problems? Princess is just so young - I was wondering if anything showed in the blood lines or the breed?

I am so so sorry that you're going through this. I have 1 cat and 2 dogs (all considered elderly) and each has had his/her share of health catastrophes.

I'll be praying for kitty (and you!)

Also, not on topic, but I thought I'd let you know I tagged you on my blog.

I hope the next results are better!

I feel for you. I really do. I know it seems ridiculous, but if anything happened to my dogs I would be beside myself. They are part of my family. I really do love them.

I'm hoping for the best. For both of you.

I'm normally a lurker, but I had to say I'm sorry to hear about this! I worked for a vet for 5 years, and while there are a lot of problems that stress from a surgery can bring about, I wouldn't give up on her. A lot of pure breed animals can develop some pretty bizarre issues (due to such fine tuned genetics and close line breeding) but I would stay optimistic. Aspiration during standard procedures is fairly uncommon (especially if the animal was fasted prior to the surgery) with the use of intubation. All of that to say, she could very well bounce back with some meds and live a healthy long life. Of course I don't know everything, just what I've seen throughout the years. Stay hopeful and try not to stress. I know how it feels though, when your animals are hurting, and it's not easy. It sounds like she is at a good facility, so hopefully they'll get it under control soon. Good luck!

I am so sorry.:*( I have been reading your blog for quit awhile but I've never posted to you. You have been through so much already. You shouldn't have to deal with this as well. I have a cat too and he will get extra love tonight. I can't even imagine how painful all of this must be. I really hope that she is one of the best case senarios.

Andrea said...

So sorry. We'll be thinking of Princess. I hope she's okay!

I sincerely hope Princess has the same result that Gunther (our dog) did. He was very sick - at one point, the vet said something about how this might be the "end" of him - and he did turn out okay. Three grand later, but he's okay. I'm so sorry...I'm a cat lover at heart and have two kitties who have been with me since 1996 and 1997. I know someday something will happen to them, but I'll never be ready for it.

Frig, I'm so very sorry.

FWIW, we have a, um, (math on fingers) 12 year old cat with a congenital heart problem who is on meds until he goes. Which doesn't seem to be any time soon. I hope this is the case for Princess. Thinking of her, and you.

OMG!! Have you contacted the cat breeder to let them know what's going on? Maybe she has something genetic and the breeder should not be putting any more kittens out there. Gah... poor little Princess. Man, K I am sorry that your plate keeps getting fuller ((hugs)).

Sarah said...

Ugh. I'm sorry. Our cat had the same thing, same grim prognosis (18-36 months for him). We are now 5 years beyond the end of the optimistic 36 months, so there is hope.

I am so sorry to hear about Princess. After being around her and playing with her and touch her velvet fur..I can only imagine how heart broken you are.

C'mon little Princess...your Mommy needs you.

I'm crossing everything for you Kathy that little Princess pulls through this just fine.

When she gets to come home snuggler her extra tight.

Rachel said...

I am so sorry. We got our dog after my second miscarriage because I really wanted to be a mommy even if my baby had four legs and lots of fur. If she were ill, people could tell me not to stress until they were blue in the face, but that wouldn't change anything. I wish she were home with you so you could just love on her. Hopefully you'll get good news and she'll be home again soon. I'll be thinking of you...

That is horrid, I have spent many, many hours in the ER vet office, many, many hours stalking my vet - my dogs Shelly and Rico and my cat Nando ARE my kids. I almost typed Sophie - that was my little feline sweetie we lost almost two years ago to kidney disease - I will never be the same.

I am sorry that this is happening but like you, I would be all over it like white on rice. I wish we could will it better - in lieu of that, I will send good thoughts to Princess and to you.

Andrea said...

I'm so sorry! A sick furry baby is not what you need right now:( I really hope they figure everything out and that the results are even better than the 'best case scenario' they gave you. I'll be thinking about your Puddin' and hoping she is better.

Jen said...

Oh no! Poor Princess and poor Princess Mommy!

I hope that they find something fixable or at least medicatable for her. My pup was sick early in her life, and we're told to expect a shorter life span too. Our job is to make sure that however much life she does have, it's a good one!

I hope Princess gets some good news soon. Remember to take it easy on yourself and your new little one.

Wow, you are just having the worst luck ever and I am so sorry. Of COURSE there is nothing you could have thought or said to make your lovely kitty have a heart problem. And you KNOW you were doing the right thing with the neutering. I sure hope kitty pulls through as good or better than the best scenario, and that this may be the final end of all the heartbreak you face.

I hope you're meditating or eating yourself into a sugar coma over there, something to destress and deguilt.

I am so sorry. AFter dealing with the loss of my little dog, I understand the guilt like you wouldn't believe. But in the end, it's hard to deal with a sick pet - there's always going to be guilt. and it's easy to tell someone just to not feel guilty and to remember all the good things about your pet.

i am so sorry you're dealing with this. :(

I'm so sorry. How stressful and awful to be dealing with this now. I have 2 cats that both have heart problems (genetic and they are litter mates) and so far they do pretty good with meds etc. I hope your little princess does so also. Thinking of you and your kitty.
