Show and Tell - Crafting Time

For today's Show and Tell (go visit Mel and check out the others too), something besides my cats!!!

First, more knitting. I finished Toodle's blanket (didn't block it yet - for non knitters, blocking is a process where you wet and shape the finished product - so it's a bit misshapen), and also knit him some matching little booties that were really easy. Plus, I made a cute little pixie bonnet (not for Toodle) that Stoli graciously modeled for us.

And now the real entertainment...Monsieur Sock Monkey! My friend got me a sock monkey kit to keep me occupied a while ago but it took me forever to finish. Partly because I don't have a sewing machine and didn't understand some of the crafting terms they used (what is tacking?) so I just sewed it all by hand, rather messily, and partly just because I am an unskilled spaz and not very good at following instructions.

First mistake came when I cut the sock from the wrong end on the very first instruction, so what should have been the head became the ass, the arms became the legs, and vice versa. This is where I left off that day, with what can only be reminiscent of the leaked media photos of Guantanamo. Puddin' was seriously terrified of this version of Sock Monkey:

Then I tried to save the sock monkey by giving him arms and a face...not sure what went wrong there, but something is certainly wrong (those black dots are supposed to be nostrils, they eyes came later. And yes, he's missing an ear still)...

I also realized that by accidentally flipping the instructions I inadvertently created not just any sock monkey, but a red-assed babboon sock monkey:

But I persevered - and I now present - the final, ready for prime-time, nuclear waste sock monkey!!!!!

As my friend said, every kid needs at least one creepy stuffed animal in his/her room, right? Puddin' has been knocking him off the dresser, we're not sure if she wants to play with him, or if she's trying to hide him so she doesn't have to look at him.

I absolutely LOVE the sock monkey, my husband was worried there was something wrong just now, I was laughing so hard. My money is on hiding, rather than 'playing with'.

You should sell these ... baboon sock monkeys, I'm sure there's a niche there. I'd buy one!

bwahahaha! I am laughing so hard my brother on speaker phone in the other room asked what the heck is so funny.

"I inadvertently created not just any sock monkey, but a red-assed babboon sock monkey"...

that would have soooo been me too.

OMG - I just laughed soooo hard. (with you, not at you of course) I think Puddin may just have *such* great taste that she wants the sock monkey as her lovey.

I love your babooned a$$ed sock monkey, LOL!!
The blanket, booties, and hat are adorable. I feel for the cat though.

That is seriously so much better than a perfectly finished sock monkey. You need to keep that forever.

Oh my... I am a longtime reader of your blog. I laughed hysterically at that, even bringing tears to my eyes, and called my husband over for the fun. Wow, that was funny. I'll admit, you did do a good job at bringing it back around! Your commentary was priceless!

I don't think I've laughed this hard in a LONG time.

And the bonnet is precious - wish I could knit.

Nice sock monkey, I'm so glad you didn't give up just because it's a little backwards!!!(it'll probably be the favorite toy)

Okay, that would be the type of sock monkey I would make. Very funny!!

Reminds me of the time my mother made my brother and I stuffed animals. We had a misshapened Sheep and a Frog legs that did not match. They were our creepy stuffed animals...

No offense to the little sock monkey, but that just gave me the best laugh! Seriously, though, people pay good money for crazy stuffed animals. What about those ugly dolls that are so popular? I think you may have found a niche with the baboon sock monkey. He rocks!!

It is wrong that I totally LOVE the sock monkey?! And I too am laughing hysterically at your wording and such!

And I LOVE the blanket, booties, and hat as well . . . I really wish I had learned to do more crafty things like that before my kids were born - they make such wonderful and treasured keepsakes.

LOL... What a funny story. Very cute Sock Monkey. You are braver than I am. I have a sewing machine and don't think I would like to attempt to make one of those on my own. I think I would rather just buy the sock monkey! :)

Love the sock monkey! It is awesome!
Thank you Puddin for modeling the hat. Very cute.
You are a wonderful knitter.

The sock monkey is awesome! You are right, every kid should totally have some adored but creepy stuffed animal. And your knitting totally makes up for any lack of sewing skills.

Not only have you moved me to tears, you also moved my husband and daughter to tears as I read the story of the sock monkey, we were all laughing so hard. Thank-you we all needed it.

That blanket and the booties are beautiful. I love the colors.
The sock monkey is so cute and funny. Love the baboon thing. It also cracked me up when you said every kid should have at least one creepy stuffed animal. I had a "bear" thin that was a furry regtangle with eyes and a nose, no mouth, no arms, no legs.

ROFL...I think you're on to somethign with the ass-monkey! Oh my God that made me laugh! :) Poor DH had to ask what was so funny.

LOVE the toodle blankie & booties, SO CUTE!

I LOVE your projects!! I wish I was coordinated to knit like you, but the yarn just ends up wrapped around the needles for me in a bunch of knots.

Oh my gosh, love the sock monkey! My favorite are the little booties though. . . too precious for words. I wish I believed when you say they were easy - super jealous of your talent!

I'm in tears over the sock monkey :0) I'd love for our little girl to have one, but there's no way I could even come close to putting it together myself. Luckily Target has them ready-made :)

I love your baboon rear-ended sock monkey!! I know you don't think he looks very good, but he's looks a hekc of a lot better than I ever could have done! Toodle will love him becasue his mommy made him! (Even if Puddin' doesn't feel the same :)

LOL, I love red-assed baboon monkey! If anything, Toodle will laugh at how utterly amazing he is! I also love the blankie and socks- blue and yellow is my favorite color combo for little boys.

You've really become quite an impressive knitter! It took me forever before I felt confident enough to move on from scarves. Way to go!

LOVE LOVE the sock monkey. I shut down my blog - thank for everything and as always I will continue to follow along with you and Toddle.

Kim said...

I laughed until I cried... literally! This is eerily similar to almost all of my crafting and sewing projects (and I use the word "project" loosely). I once hemmed my husbands pajama pants and there was a 2 inch discrepancy in the hem... on one leg. Of course, there was also a big discrepancy between the two legs because hemming on a diagonal is very difficult to reproduce exactly.

The blanket and booties, however, are gorgeous. Toodle will love them.

Bahahahah! Love the monkey! =) You did way better than I would have.

The blanket and booties are WAY cute.
